What does practical cyber security study look like?
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Cyber Defence and Networking) at UNSW College is built around hands-on learning, helping you gain the practical skills you need to thrive in the cyber security industry.
Students work with real business briefs and datasets from the first term, using industry-relevant tools, technologies and professional software.
There are no traditional exams. Instead, students complete industry-designed assessments using real-world briefs, datasets and case studies. They can also take part in competitions and practical challenges that simulate workplace scenarios.
The program offers opportunities to earn industry-recognised certifications across areas such as cloud, security, cyber and networking.
Industry connection is also built into the program through employer consultation, advisory boards, and guest collaborators and advisors. Students may hear from organisations such as AWS, Microsoft and CompTIA, while teaching can include experts with backgrounds in cloud architecture, cyber security, data engineering and software development.
The degree runs for 36 months, comprising six semesters and 12 terms, with each term delivered over eight weeks. Students also complete compulsory work placement in Year 2 or Year 3, helping connect technical learning with real workplace expectations.
Alongside cyber security expertise, the program develops skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, adaptability, leadership and project management. Those capabilities matter because protecting an organisation is rarely a one-person job.
