What does a software engineer actually do?

What does practical study look like?
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development) at UNSW College is built around practical experience rather than traditional exams, making it primed to support you on your journey to a career in software engineering.
You’ll work on real-world, industry-led projects, with regular opportunities to apply what you’re learning to workplace-style challenges and build a clearer understanding of what employers expect. This includes gaining hands-on experience with tools and platforms used across modern technology environments.
When it comes to qualifications, the program also offers opportunities to earn industry-recognised certifications across areas such as cloud, security, cyber and networking. This broader exposure is useful because professional software development rarely happens in a neat little coding bubble. Applications can rely on cloud services, databases, networks and other connected systems, so understanding how those pieces fit together can make a real difference.
Building experience throughout the applied degree
The degree runs for 36 months, comprising six semesters and 12 terms, with each term delivered over eight weeks. With industry-led projects built into the courses, you’ll build practical skills across the full experience of the degree.
Students also complete compulsory work placement in Year 2 or Year 3, helping connect technical learning with workplace expectations. A dedicated work placement support team is available to support students through the process.
Industry connection continues throughout the program through employer consultation, advisory boards, mentorship and guest speakers. Students may also hear insights from organisations such as AWS, Microsoft and CompTIA.
Alongside technical expertise, the degree develops communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, problem solving and project management.
What does a career path in software engineering look like?
There’s no single path into software engineering. Some people move directly into junior development roles, while others build experience through testing, application support or broader IT work.
