Our Pre-Masters Program is a pathway program developed for students like you, who want to commence postgraduate studies at UNSW but don't meet the entry requirements. Developed in collaboration with UNSW, the program strengthens your academic research, communication and English language skills, while helping you refine your creative, conceptual and critical thinking. It prepares you to transition smoothly into postgraduate study at UNSW Sydney’s School of Art & Design.

Who is this program for?
The Pre-Masters Program (Art & Design) is for international students with a background in creative or design disciplines who want to pursue postgraduate study at UNSW but do not meet direct academic or English entry requirements.

On successful completion of the Pre-Masters Program (Art & Design), based on English level and specialisation, you may be eligible for up to 12 units of credit towards chosen master's degree:

Note: All students entering the Pre-Masters Program (Art & Design) will undertake at least one master’s-equivalent course (Creative Experimentation) and will receive 6 units of credit towards their chosen master’s degree program.
Students entering Pre-Masters Program with an IELTS greater than or equal to 6.5 (or equivalent) will undertake a second master’s equivalent course (Communication Skills for Creative Disciplines) to receive an additional 6 units of credit towards their chosen master’s degree (i.e. up to 12 units of credit in total).
Program structure
The Pre-Masters Program comprises of three (3) core courses and one (1) elective.

This course is designed to help you develop the skills necessary to conduct effective research on academic literature and improve your overall literacy skills. Through a combination of workshops readings, assignments, and discussions, you will learn how to identify research questions, develop innovative research questions, find and evaluate sources, synthesise information, and communicate their findings effectively through writing and presentation
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
This course will introduce you to the fundamental principles and philosophy of innovation and entrepreneurship. It will focus on teaching innovative skills, project management, and entrepreneurial concepts to allow you to put your imagination and skills to the test by identifying real world problems and generating innovative solutions to address these.
Creative Experimentation
This course helps you to explore the potential of your own creativity by engaging in experimental art practices and processes. Through experimentation, reflection, and iteration you will develop a refined body of creative work based on experimental processes.

Academic English for Higher Studies is a unit of study within the Pre-Masters Program intended to support students who do not yet meet UNSW’s English Language requirements. The course is designed to provide a staged, language-supported experiential process through the delivery of a structured research project on a discipline-relevant topic.
Communication Skills for Creative Disciplines
This course develops your ability to confidently engage with, interpret and express complex ideas using an appropriate mix of communication strategies tailored to creative disciplines. In addition to an appreciation of fundamental research protocols in creative disciplines, you will enhance your academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to better express coherent intellectual arguments, towards developing your own academic 'voice'.
How is the program assessed?
There are a variety of assessment methods including - Quizzes, Exams, Assignments, Portfolios, Presentations, Seminars, Case Studies, Reports and Journals.
