The media world moves fast, but at UNSW College, we make sure our students don’t just keep up - they lead. That’s where academics like Amy Miller come in. With over 15 years of experience teaching across Master’s, Bachelor’s, and Diploma programs, Amy knows exactly what it takes to turn a passion for arts and media into a career. Having worked in the fast-paced agency worlds of Sydney and London, she doesn't just teach; she mentors students to find their own voice in an ever-changing digital world.

Bridging theory and practice

Amy’s classroom extends far beyond lectures and tutorials. As she still runs her own media consulting agency alongside her teaching, she creates a space where academic rigour meets the industry pulse.

"I’ve been teaching communication for a long time, and I still get thoroughly inspired by the enthusiasm my students bring," Amy says. "The blend of theoretical and practical application provides a really interesting and engaging environment."

She mentors students to ensure they aren't just discussing concepts, but are actively developing communication strategies, tailoring content for different audiences, and learning how to present a campaign proposal effectively to a client.

A supported learning journey

Amy plays an important role in delivering our scaffolded teaching approach, which helps students take on their learning step-by-step. With classes capped at 20–30 students, Amy ensures everyone has the time to develop foundational skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and independent learning. This structure is designed to meet students exactly where they are, so that the transition to university-level study feels natural rather than overwhelming.

"I find that when students shift to second year, that jump into independent learning can be a challenge," Amy observes. "What we do is provide the steps to feel confident."

Whether it is getting comfortable with group presentations or refining professional writing, the goal is to move beyond the textbook and focus on skills that are transferable across the entire communications industry.

Finding their voice

In this more intimate learning environment, students are immersed in the fundamentals of media before choosing their specific specialisation at UNSW Sydney.

"We really try to prepare students by exposing them to a range of media topics and experiential learning, so they’re comfortable wearing many hats," Amy explains.

This extra time allows them to build a strong foundation across various disciplines while narrowing down what they are truly passionate about.

Inspiring the next generation

Thanks to the UNSW College diploma program, I found my focus in media and communications. I began with media studies, but after one term, I realised PR was my passion. The program’s hands-on approach and strong support for students are preparing me well for second year.”
