So, you’ve accepted your offer. Your laptop is charged, your first-day outfit is ready, and you’ve already thought about which classes to take and which clubs to join. But then there’s orientation – is it really worth going?
The answer is yes. At UNSW College, orientation is not only an essential step, it’s required for all new students. It’s the best way to start your studies on the right foot – and it might just surprise you.
Get settled in
Most higher education providers run some form of orientation, often a mix of information sessions and events. At UNSW College, you’ll study in a more intimate campus setting. Our orientation is designed specifically for this environment and is built to save you time later by covering everything you need up front.
During orientation, you’ll:
Go on a campus tour
Get detailed course and timetable information
Meet your teachers, classmates, and dedicated support staff
Learn about the personalised academic and wellbeing support available to you
Take part in social activities and have fun
“But I already know where to go...”
Even if you feel confident, orientation is far more than a campus walk-through. It’s your introduction to the academic, administrative, and social sides of UNSW College life, all of which are vital for a successful start.
You’ll leave knowing where to go, who to talk to, and how to access support. You’ll also have the chance to meet other new students and start building friendships, which can make a big difference to your first few weeks.
We don’t recommend skipping orientation. It’s designed to make your start smoother and less stressful once classes begin.
“I found people who shared the same interests, and that made a big difference. It’s been a fun and meaningful way to meet new people, and feel more connected.” Alex Lewis, Diploma in Science
How long is Orientation?
Orientation is held on campus at UNSW College and usually runs over two days for some programs. Each day covers different information, so it’s important to attend both.
Sessions take place a few days before classes start. The exact dates depend on your program and intake.
All new students, including those transferring from another UNSW College program, are required to attend orientation. If you do not attend, you will not be commenced as a student.
If you know you cannot arrive in time, please contact your education agent to discuss your options.
Three days before orientation, check your personal email for an important message from UNSW College with all the information you’ll need to be ready.
What to set up before Orientation
To make the most of orientation, get these steps sorted first:
Set up your student accounts
Complete the “Get Started” steps on your orientation page with your student ID, including setting up your email and booking your student ID card appointment.
Join the Buddy Program
Starting somewhere new can be overwhelming, especially if you’re coming from overseas or interstate. That’s why we created the Buddy Program for Diploma and Foundation Studies students.
You’ll be automatically enrolled and placed in a group with other new students, guided by a Peer Mentor (a current student). Your Peer Mentor will support you during your first four weeks, beginning the week before orientation.
This program is designed to help you settle in more quickly, get answers to your questions, and most importantly, make new friends.
If you’re unsure how to find your Buddy Group, visit the Buddy Program Booth on Orientation Day.
