Chemistry often feels like a subject defined by abstract concepts and complex equations. But at UNSW College, we're changing that narrative. We believe in making learning accessible, engaging, and grounded in real understanding.
Our core focus is to ensure students build the foundational knowledge necessary to excel in the next step: research-intensive university studies at UNSW Sydney, one of Australia’s leading research institutions and a global top 20 university (QS World University Rankings, 2026).
Meet Dr Liam Scarratt, one of our dedicated educators on a mission to make chemistry click for every student.
From science outreach to the classroom
Liam’s journey with science began in 2013 when he pursued a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Chemistry and Physics at the University of Sydney. Throughout his academic career, he was actively involved in science outreach and shared his research with global audiences.
“My experience as an international researcher taught me how to communicate complex ideas to audiences from different backgrounds,” Liam explains. This ignited his passion for teaching and communicating complex ideas in a clear and engaging way.
Making chemistry relatable
Liam believes the key to understanding chemistry lies in making it relatable. “I aim to connect classroom concepts directly to real-world applications,” he says. “By drawing these connections, I help students build a clearer, more meaningful understanding of chemistry and its relevance in everyday life.”
Central to Liam’s teaching style is encouraging curiosity. “My teaching style is all about sparking curiosity and encouraging students to approach topics with an open, inquisitive mindset,” he explains. By inspiring students to ask the fundamental question of “why,” Liam helps them become independent thinkers and confident problem-solvers.
Building a supportive community
Liam understands that having a strong support network can make a huge difference to students’ confidence and success.
“At UNSW College, we emphasise community building,” Liam says. “I encourage students to form connections early on — whether that’s joining study groups, finding friends with shared interests, or getting involved in clubs.”
He also focuses on helping students develop strong study habits so they can become independent learners before transitioning to university. Recognising that every student learns differently, he provides practical tools and strategies tailored to individual needs.
“Many of my students have shared that my emphasis on curiosity and connecting ideas has helped them develop their study skills and feel more comfortable in their learning journey,” Liam shares.
By highlighting how different chemistry concepts are interconnected, Liam makes learning feel less overwhelming and helps students see the patterns and principles that underpin science.
Inspiring the next generation
For Liam, the most rewarding part of teaching is watching his students grow. “It’s rewarding to see students develop as independent learners,” he says. He is passionate about creating a positive and supportive environment where students gain confidence in their studies and future pathways, taking pride in knowing he is helping shape the next generation of scientists and innovators.
The Diploma Program has helped me by implementing the bases of knowledge needed to progress further with our studies. Furthermore, it gave me more information that helped me decide which major I want to take in university and what path I want to take in the future."
